Wellness news might be disturbing: if you live in the US, you’ve eaten food that was fertilized with “biosolids.” That’s an excellent way of saying “treated human waste.” Every time you or the hundreds of millions of other Americans without septic tanks flush the toilet, wash dishes, shower, etc. that waste doesn’t just disappear into the ether. It goes to a waste treatment facility to be processed, before being reused as a fertilizer on farms, parks, forestland, and more. I should highlight that Biosolids are NOT allowed under USDA-certified organic standards if you believe that report. According to the research, farmers (organic and commercial) may use composted animal manure on their farms. Another reason to take the bull by the horn and commence the process for sustainability regardless of how small or create a community garden regardless of your location.
