It's almost like he is pushing a hybrid form of Arianism. The Word was with the Father in the beginning. The Word is not a created being. He is essentially saying The Word was a created being but doesn't fully want to say it like Arius said it.

Begotten and not made means The Word is the only Begotten of The Father and not a creation of the Father.

It's like wordplay. Parsing words and switching meanings for the sake of argument. Very confusing.

He's saying Yah the Father and the Wisdom of Yah (Hokmah) created The Word.
