HALLELUYAHUAH! ABBA YAH IS GOOOOOOOOD!!!!!! APTTMHY For bringing us back here... LET'S REJOICE!!!!!!

“Yah never moves without purpose or plan, When trying His servant or molding a man. Give thanks to the Most-High though your testing seems long; In darkness, He giveth a song.

“O rejoice in the Most-High, He makes no mistake. He knoweth the end of each path that I take. For when I am tried and purified, I shall come forth as gold.”

Shalom Mi Linkie dem,
I wanted to come in to share with you all some food places to visit. I'm inspired to do this because often I am at a loss myself for where to go. If you have spent a few years outside of Jamaica and haven't been able to visit regularly, when you return it can sometimes be challenging to know where to go to eat good food and " hold a vibe." Though much stays the same here at home, much has also changed.
So here are some pointers.
At my cousin's leading, I visited 'Jerk Box' on June 28, 2023. (It's good to have a local on hand to guide and help me get reacquainted). Now, I must say there may be some bias in my review because pleasant company can influence an experience 🙂 Now that we have gotten that truth out of the way, here goes...
Firstly, I must say that I didn't know this place existed. When I left Jamaica in 2016, it certainly wasn't there! There where you ask? Good question. Devon House Courtyard- which by the way is totally renovated!
Now since it is at Devon House, I wouldn't instinctively think to visit 'Jerk Box' because my assumption would be that its location would make its prices only for the rich and famous.
Prices
Surprisingly, it is not more expensive than say a meal at Island Grill with 1/4 Jerk chicken starting at $1000 and festival being $100 a one.
Menu
If you are not into chicken they also sell pork, seafood and even pasta. Again, I was surprised that a Jerk Hut sells pasta but they do. I had a smidge from my Cousin's 'plate'; it can gwaan!
Taste
The jerk chicken was not bad. It was not stellar but it can pass. A bit dry but tasty and though I am not one to eat bones, if you suck off the bone-cause when you eating Jerk chicken ah dat yuh fi duh- yuh can tell seh it season! The festival was also tasty. I prefer Island Grill's festival but that's probably because it has a bit more sugar. 🫣
Atmosphere
What I liked most about 'Jerk Box' that would cause it to be on my repeat visit list is the ambiance. As my best friend would say "It did have a vibe!" It was decorated with zinc features and graffiti/street type art which helped to make it feel like an authentic 'outta road' jerk hut experience. There was also an outdoor dining area which is where we started our experience. We moved inside because it began to rain. The indoor seating area is cozy. The main drawback for me was that it was not air conditioned. It's the height of summer and it' hot out here! Perhaps go in the evening when the sun has gone down.
Service
Customer service was standard. If you are Jamaican, yuh know how it guh! Worse in a post-pandemic werl everybody stress out! So, I try to be understanding. However, I must say that the attendant did her best to be helpful. She took my order without making me feel like I was an interruption to her day! So points for that. Also, points for the accommodation that we received. Given the wet weather conditions they allowed us to remain inside to have our Devon House ice-cream. I would return to this restaurant; on a cooler day.
Location
Devon House is central and it's a pleasant location. It's not hard to access in terms of traffic. During the week, parking is not too bad to get. In the summer however, expect a crowd. Keep 'Jerk Box' on your 'Places to Go' list eh! Happy eating!
