DECORATED TREES, ANCIENT CUSTOMS, AND THE SHIFT FROM “THE WAY”
This reflection is not written from a place of judgment. It is written with humility, honesty, and a sincere desire to seek truth. I am not claiming perfection, nor am I condemning anyone. I am learning, growing, and examining Scripture as I go. This is about understanding, not accusation. Scripture reminds us that truth does not always come from places of status or authority. “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength” (Psalm 8:2). Many of Yah’s servants were
young or unsure when they were called. Samuel was a child when Yah spoke to him. Jeremiah felt unqualified. Elijah thought he was alone until Yah reminded him that thousands had not bowed to Baal. Seeking truth is not rebellion—it is obedience.
The tradition of decorating trees during the winter season is widely accepted today as part of Christmas. For many, it represents warmth, generosity, family, and togetherness. These traditions are deeply emotional and often inherited without question. Most people never stop to ask where they came from or whether they align with Scripture.
The Bible tells us, “Study to show yourself approved unto Elohim, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Faith is not meant to be blind. We are called to examine what we believe.
In Jeremiah 10, Yah warns His people not to adopt the customs of other nations. The word used is“derek,” meaning path or religious practice. Jeremiah describes a tree cut from the forest, shaped by human hands, decorated with silver and gold, and fastened upright. The point is not the tree itself, but the act of assigning spiritual meaning to something Yah did not command. This same warning appears throughout Scripture. In Deuteronomy 12, Yah says not to worship Him the way other nations worship their gods. Yahushua repeated this warning when He said, “In vain do they
worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Mark 7:7–9). These were religious people, yet they had placed tradition above obedience.
The example of Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 10 further reveals this truth. They offered strange fire—fire Yah had not commanded. Though their intentions may have been sincere, their worship was unauthorized. This shows that sincerity does not replace obedience. Over time, religious practices became blended with culture. This is called syncretism—the mixing of truth with tradition. This occurred especially after Christianity became part of the Roman Empire. Pagan
festivals were repackaged, symbols were reinterpreted, and traditions were absorbed. December 25 was never given in Scripture as the date of Yahushua's birth. It aligned with Roman solar celebrations, not with biblical instruction. Yahuah, however, gave His people appointed times. Leviticus 23 lists His feasts—Passover, Unleavened Bread, First fruits, Shavuot, Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. These are the only days Scripture calls holy. Scripture also warns against replacement theology—the idea that Israel has been replaced. Romans 11 explains that Gentiles are grafted into Israel, not substituted for. Ephesians 2 shows that those who were once far off are brought near and become part of the covenant. Yahushua came for the lost sheep
of Israel, and through Him the nations are joined, not separated.
The prophets repeatedly speak of restoration. Jeremiah 23, Ezekiel 37, Deuteronomy 30, and Isaiah 11 all point to a regathering of Yah’s people, physically and spiritually. This restoration involves truth, identity, and obedience. This reflection is not meant to cause fear or division. It is meant to encourage awareness and sincerity.
Yah is patient. Yah is merciful. Yahushua is His Son and King. Truth matters, even when it challenges us. Yahushua warned that when an unclean spirit leaves and the house is empty, it returns with others. Removing the error is not enough; truth must replace it. This journey is about returning to Yah with humility, honesty, and obedience.
That is the heart of this reflection.
